Sex: Okay or Not Okay?

I feel like most movies that I have gone to seen lately or have rented involved some sort of sex scene. I am not entirely sure how I feel about this. Well, it is obvious that sex does sell but why is it necessary to put in every movie? The first movie that popped into my head when thinking about sex being in movies is that of Pearl Harbor. Although Pearl Harbor is an older movie, one would think that the movie would have to do with the actual event and the people involved. Granted the movie did include lots of information, but of course, there was a love story that involved sex scenes that were associated with the movie. Are we as a society only concerned about sex and what is involved with it? Why is it not possible to watch a movie that does not involve sex? Another historical movie that pops into my mind that involves a love scene and sex scenes is Titanic. I guess sex is such a common thing in movies that I have never really thought about how much it is in movies until this class. In my own opinion, I think this is a great way for the mass media to stop partaking in stereotypes that our society strives to live by. The biggest stereotype that I believe it will help reduce is that of women feeling the need to look like a centerfold. Most of the actresses that have been used in these movies that have sex scenes look unrealistic and unattainable. However, many women across the country will push themselves to look this way even though it is not possible. I think this change is needed and will be ultimately beneficial. What do you guys think?

  1. Lauren, you do make a good point in that tons of movies now-a-days have sex scenes in their movies. It gets a little obnoxious sometimes and it's terrible for people whom have issues such as low self esteem. However, I have seen in numerous documentaries and have heard via radio and other means that US media is actually not as sexually influential as European movies. It might seem strange to think, but European movie have a more focus on romance and a more "modern naked" approach, where as American movies have a focus on choosing the hottest actors to have "awesome" sex. Also, American movies have been quoted to have A LOT more violence in the movies compared to other countries. So, American directors should really do their studying of what other countries are showing so that they aren't killing our society. It's very unfortunate this isn't happening.

  2. I really like the observation you have made here. Romantic movies definitely create this idea that being in a relationship means you have to have sex. As consumers, when we go to see these types of movies we expect to these types off love scenes. I also think that in some recent movies, the sex scenes have gotten much more x-rated. For example, I am sure you have seen Sex and The City The Movie. In this movie everything is exposed as far as sex goes, I know it is R-rated, but at the same time why is is necessary to go this far and show everything. I also think it is interesting that I don't think I have ever watched a romantic movie where the main character's were celibate. It is unfortunate that the media feels the need to directly correlate romance to having sex. What kind of message is that sending?

  3. Hey Lauren,

I agree. Romance is so exploited by sex as if that's what makes a relationship. There are obviously people who wait until marriage to have sex - does this mean they don't have good romantic relationships? No, not at all so what do our movies make it look that way... Thanks for pointing this out, it makes a really great point. I can relate this to my topic because sex isn't everything, caring and being passionate about your significant other makes a relationship great and meaningful. I like having with my boyfriend but that isn't what completes our relationship. He's my best friend, I can tell him everything and we support each other. Great sex is just an awesome added bonus, not what makes our relationship.
Great point, good catch on modern movies.
