The media that I have chose to write about is the popular show Sex and the City. The reason I want to research this show is for the reason that it contains so many of Galician's myths about sex, love, and romance. I am most curious about how this show affects society and the way that people in society act. The reason for this is because I believe that these myths in the episodes will have a negative affect on people in society. The audience for my research would be the females that are in society. I think that females will be most interested in my research and the information that I will collect. I think that they will be most interested because of the fact that so many women strive to live their lives by these myths and often times it affects their lives. If they see the information and see that it also affects other females, it might help them. I want a positive and proactive response to my research. I need to find strong evidence and proof that it does affect society. The sources that I will need to find will be surveys and articles. If women see how the results of the surveys from other women, the results will be a bigger impact.
Timeline:
5/20: Research at the Library in class
5/20-5/22:Read comments on my blog and add it to my proposal
5/23-5/24: Turn in annotated bibliography; work on rough draft
5/25: Rough Draft due
5/26-6/1: Work on final Copy
6/1 or 6/3: Workshops in class or individually
6/3-6/10: Finish paper and turn in
Questions: Is this a good topic to write about? The only problems I might encounter is that of finding sources for my research.
Goals: I hope to find research that shows the affects of the myths in this show.

Question 1 for Myths of Sex, Love, and Romance of Older Women in Golden Girls": How does the negative stereotypes of old people become apparent in the Golden Girls?
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2 for Myths of Sex, Love, and Romance of Older Women in Golden Girls": How is Galician's myth 1 not applicable to the Golden Girls?
Question 3 for "Gender Equity Stereotypes of Prescriptions?": How is Galician's myth 3 apparent in the movie What Women Want?
Great topic for this essay, Lauren. I can tell you that there is definitely research out there that discusses how women and men respond to the show; there is also an entire edited collection of critical essays on SATC.
ReplyDeleteFor your rewrite, you might think about what different messages the show could possibly send if the myths you find were changed into the prescriptions. Would SATC send healthier messages to women about looks, sexuality, and love? As a thought, someone in one of my classes once commented that the show seems to counter most of the myths at the beginning, but ends up forwarding them by the end. Why does that change take place? And, what would happen if the show continued countering these myths - what would it be like? I'll be interested to see how you continue to develop your ideas for this essay. ~Megan
Lauren, what an appropriate topic since the new movie is coming out next week! I really think the whole idea about how the messages that Sex and the City are negative, is an important topic to touch on. The characters lives are so glamorized in the movie, but also in real life. For example Carrie who is played by Sarah Jessica Parker, is very stylish on the show and in real life. Because of this whole idea I think you could somehow bring the myth about actor's fantasy life being compared to their real life. I don't think you need to worry about finding research on this topic, Sex and the City has been around for a very long time, I am sure someone has written an article on it! Good start so far!!
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI for one love this show so I'd love to see what you have to write about it. I think the show has had a definite impact on society and has changed the way women carry themselves. Are there specific changes in society you'll be writing about/commenting on? I think it would be great to focus on whether society looks highly or down upon Samantha and her demeanor and antics, and if you think this has changed the way young women treat and interact with men.
There are sooo many different directions you can go with this paper! Blogging practically exploded when this show aired and showed Carrie writing all the time. It also tackles the idea of homosexuality. I think that for one would be a fantastic direction to go in when writing it since the show detailed both gay and lesbian relationships, ways, lifestyles, etc. Just thoughts.. I'm starting to ramble on about the show now because it's so awesome.
I'm sure you'll be able to find some research about it as well. Perhaps not directly related surveys but if you search under the right words you'll be able to find some surveys about sex and love for sure.
Good Luck!!
Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI think Sex and the City is a perfect show in regards to analyzing Galician's myths. I feel like your auidence may be larger than just females in society; after you "re-write" SATC, the women (in the series) actions, thoughts, obsessions, etc will definitelty change, thus, affecting the relationships they are in as well (family, boyfriends, husbands, children, etc). Also, what myths are you attempting to forward/counter?
Myths that come to mind for ME are: 5, 9, 10. It might be cool to specifically analyze individual characters. For example, myth 10 (the right mate "completes you" filling your needs and making your dreams come true) is so NOT Samantha -- She is so independent and self-driven, however if the show were to be the opposite she most likely would strongly reinforce this myth. How would this change her character and viewers outlooks upon her?
Great start and good luck!
Also, analyzing Big and Carrie's relationship. Obviously they forward (at most parts in the seasons) myth 9: all you really need is love, so it doesn't matter if you and your lover have very different values. However, if you were to do the "opposite" what would Big and Carrie's relationship look like? Obviously, all the women (especially being in NY) are "fashion foward" "trendy" and in general, concerned with looking good for men. What would SATC become if they weren't like this? I hope that helps a bit more, just some ideas that came to mind!
