A Walk to Remember
After considering many different options and different medias, I came to the conclusion to write my second essay about the movie, A Walk to Remember. I wanted to choose a media that is somewhat older and would not be chosen by one of my classmates. Actually, my friend Jessa helped me pick this media while studying at the library. A Walk to Remember is a movie that was popular at the time of it’s release and contains many of the myths that are presented by Galician. The myths that I see present in this movie is myth 7 which states, “The love of a good and faithful true woman can change a man from a ‘beast’ to a ‘prince.’”; myth 9 “All you really need is love, so it doesn’t matter if you and your lover have very different values.”; and myth 10 “The right mate ‘completes you’ – filling your needs and making your dreams come true.” Although these myths were forwarded in the movie, there were also myths that were countered. Myth 1: “Your perfect partner is cosmically pre-destined, so nothing/nobody can ultimately separate you.”; Myth 2: “There’s such a thing as ‘love at first sight.’”; and Myth 3 “Your true ‘soul mate’ should KNOW what you’re thinking or feeling (without your having to tell).” Myth 7 is shown through the main character Landon changing from a “bad boy” to a “good boy” after falling in love with the other main character Jaime, who is the preacher’s daughter. Also, myth 9 is forwarded in this movie because both characters have completely different morals and values but yet love seems to be enough for them. Myth 10 is forwarded because Jaime inspires the “bad boy” who was not doing very well in school to get into medical school and to become a doctor. She essentially helps make his dreams come true. Myth 1 is countered because at the end of the movie, they are separated from each other despite being the perfect mate for each other. Also, myth 2 is countered because Landon and Jaime do not fall in love at first sight. In fact, they don’t like each other very much. Myth 3 is countered as well through Landon not realizing that Jaime was upset because she was terminally ill. I want to show to my audience that while a lot of movies portray the Galician’s myths as real, they will also counter other Galician myths. My position presents the positive way that myths are forwarded, the negative way myths are forwarded, and vice versa for the myths that are countered. It will explore the issues of false hope, unreal reality, etc.

This is a great choice for your second essay, Lauren. Judging from your post, the film will give you a lot to write about. My suggestion is that you think about the points at the end that you make about false hope, unreality, and the way the film conveys these messages. It might be good for you to also narrow your focus in terms of the myths: as you try and get your point across, think about which myths best help you convey your idea.
ReplyDeleteAs I read through what you are writing here, I think that it might be interesting to focus on the way the film seems to forward particular myths, but as it counters the myths, it presents the idea that.... (insert your thought here). I'm interested to see what you come up with! ~Megan
Lauren, I really like the movie you have chosen to analyze. A Walk to Remember is one of my favorite movies! It definitely clearly forwards and counters the myths you have picked out. I really like how you are planning on applying the myths found in the movie to the "bigger idea", being false hope and unreality. In my opinion, I think you are using the right amount of myths in your paper. I think using to many could clutter a paper. You definitely have a lot of information to work with from the movie and you seem like you have a good idea of how your paper will be set up.
ReplyDeleteQuotation/Response:
ReplyDeleteLauren plans to write her second essay about a movie called A Walk to Remember that is about a preacher’s daughter and a boy she falls in love with. Through this essay Lauren intends to “explore the issues of false hope [and] unreal reality.” To do this she will focus on several aspects that forward Galician’s myths number 7 (the love of a good and faithful woman can change a man from a beast to a prince), myth number 9 (all you need is love and it doesn’t matter if you and your lover have different values) and myth number 10 (the right mate completes your and makes your dreams come true). She will also explain how the movie counters myths number 1 (your partner is cosmically predestined and nothing can separate you), myth number 2 (love at first sight is real), and myth number 3 (your soul mate knows what you’re thinking without you having to say anything).
First off, I love this movie. It’s really sad but good. I think that it’s a really good choice for this essay. I think it will be easy for you to pick which myth goes to what scene and whether or not it forwards or defies the myth. Since you want to include so many of Galician’s myths I don’t think you’ll have any problem meeting the page requirement.
Lauren's paper focuses on different myths that are forwarded and countered. There are 6 different myths that are mentioned within this proposal. The main plot of the movie is a girl that changes this "bad boy" to a "good boy," which forwards myth 7: the love of a woman can change a man from a "beast" to a "prince."
ReplyDeleteI do like all the analyzing that you'll be doing. You have a good start with picking examples and telling the audience how and why they counter or forward these myths. However, just looking at the proposal there is a lot, almost too much, myths that you'll be talking about. Your paper could a little too distracting and it might be hard for readers to see your overall focus.
